Thanks Scott. I had one really good Stillwater day with this pattern but then have not fished it in a few years now. I am going to tie some up now with your inspiration!
Nice tie! I've had success with this fly at Georgetown, its his highly touted Rickards Stillwater nymph that has not produced for me. Any thoughts on that pattern? I like his books.
Scott, have you always tied in the collar feather first for your soft hackles? I only started using that technique after watching one of Hans' videos when he showed how he does it.
I noticed you tied the collar hackle in first. Just curious why you do that way. Is it because it makes a smaller head as mentioned above? I was just thinking of this pattern the other day. I have had some great days with this fly. I usually use mallard dyed wood duck for it. Thanks for the sbs.
My best luck has been when the fish are feeding within a few feet of the surface or taking emergers just under the surface. I love this fly on an intermediate sink line. I have also used this successfully Sight casting to feeding fish near the shore in clearwater.
