Dearborn River, Montana

  1. My son and two of his friends floated the Dearborn River last Saturday. It is a tributary to the Missouri. They had a tough time taking any fish, but it was a picturesque 19 mile float, all through a private ranch. I don't know where they put in, but they took out at Craig on the Missouri. Have any of you floated this river? If so, how did you do?
  2. I have floated that same stretch. The put-in is at the Highway 287 bridge and the takeout usually requires a short float on the Mo. We floated it in July, almost 20 years ago - mostly as a diversion from a week of fishing on the Mo. By that time of the year the flows are pretty low, the water has warmed, and most of the good trout have long-since returned to the main river. That said, we did a 2-day float in our pontoon boats, caught some (mostly small) fish and had a great time. From a scenery perspective, it may be the most picturesque float in the state.
