Steve and I camped and fished on the Deschutes below Maupin for three days this past weekend. Good camping, great weather, s-l-o-w fishing. Most people fishing were blaming the White River, which was spitting some nice pea soup, but we thought the visibility was OK (3-6 feet depending on the time of day). Above the White River got tons of pressure (we had most holes to ourselves down toward Mack's) but people we spoke to weren't catching many up there either.
We had two pulls in three days, with one (small, slightly ugly, hatchery) fish landed. Steve hooked a nice fish about 20 mins after our arrival, lost it on a jump, and joked "What if this is the only fish I hook this weekend." Kiss of death if I ever heard one. There were a surprising number of chinooks in the river; we saw several rolling fish, caught one jack, and spotted some redds. Steve spent a fun couple of hours drifting glo bugs behind the kings and caught the heck out of the redsides that day.
We finally got a good hookup and a fish the last morning before we drove home, which made us much happier. A few pics are below for those who want to see fish and a rattler.
