So, I've been wanting to try my hand at tying some Humpies for the 1st time. Problem is, I just realized I'm out of deer hair. Can I use elk hair on a humpy?
Sure...why not? You're the one tying so why not???
I actually use caribou when I tie mine...someone once told me long ago that caribou was quite abit more boyant (sp?) then deer.
If it is the color you're trying to match there isn't any problem.
Good luck, and besides you might find out that in your area waters alternating from the original pattern might produce better for ya...THATS THE BEAUTY OF TYING YOUR OWN FLIES!!!
Many of the recipes I have read call for Elk Hair anyways.
