I fished the lower Snoqualmie yesterday prospecting for SRCs. I only had an hour so I found a likely spot that would have good oxygen (because the water is warmer than normal) and a decent slower pool nearby. I was able to land and release 4 sea-runs, 7 whitefish, and 1 smolt. All in all, it was a decent hour of fishing.
Strangely, this is definitely my year for whitefish. I have caught more whitefish this year than the last five years combined.
The SRCs tend to follow the salmon. If you're running into a lot of smolts, move on. The smolts tend not to hang around if the bigger boys are about.
Don't give away your secret spot but were you above or below the tolt (carnation)? I 'm still looking for those elusive SRC and I found zero up by fall city...I'm limited to wading so that may be my problem... the frog water gets pretty deep .
I found a few chrome 10-12inchers this morning along with a few whitefish as well. I was below carnation.
Last night I took 2 of my boys up near fall city. Couldn't believe the traffic on the river for a Thurs night!! All the pullouts I wanted to try were taken, and when I did make my way to a run to fish, an aluminum boat pulled through, clanged against all the rocks, then got stuck right in my run, got out and pushed, and of course, I didn't catch anything. Oh well, it was nice to get out with the boys...
The largest I caught was 15". I had one other 13". The remaining two were 11-12". They were solid fish and strong fighters.
I fished up river from Fall City. They say to focus on frog water but I've found that is more true early and late in the day. Since I was fishing during the hot part of the day, I focused on areas with good oxygen (riffles and slow rapids).
