Later in the summer I'll be heading over to the Twisp area. I know about fishing the Methow, but is there any good fly fishing on the Twisp River?

It's like we need to do an exorcism around here. Ghosts of dead douchebags keep resurfacing.

It fishes about as well as other central Washington small rivers. There's lots of log piles and brush to scramble over or through. I've caught a mix of 5-12" cutts and bows. I think it's a solid 3wt river.

The Twisp is very small rocky and woody with mostly small cutthroat and steelhead smolt. I would recommend exploring the upper stretches with a light rod and a few simulators.

The river closes annually on August 15th to protect spawning fish but the Methow will still be open until the end of September depending on steelhead numbers.

It should probably be designated as a creek rather than a river. No matter; it's delightful to wade and fish in mid-summer. I wish WA had more streams of that size.

Fishing there is great, especially after getting goods from Cinnamon Twisp bakery.

It's a fun creek but be sure you know where the closure boundary is at War Creek. I've had more than one person describe where they were fishing and turns out that they were fishing closed waters above War Creek.

BTW, I've heard a rumor that someone may propose a rule change to keep it open longer next year. Be sure to watch for it and submit your comments if you want a longer season. Late Aug. and September fishing would be heavenly as the water drops low enough to make it a true small creek/river.

The Methow Valley Fly fishers are in conversation with the DFW about opening more sections of the Methow, Chewuch and Twisp Rivers and extending the season. The next club meeting is tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6:30 in the Liberty Bell HS library if anyone wants to attend and get more info! If so I will see you there! Rick

Is the closure above War creek in place because of high bull trout counts?

Thanks, Rick. I heard Bob and the club were working on something but wasn't sure how far along it was.

I visited Winthrop with the wife last year. Didnt take any rods with me though, romantic time with the wifey..

Would it be a good time to try fishing in this area this time of year? I will be returning home for 30 days starting 23 May.. If I can fish this area, anyone have any pointers??

+1 for flyfisherproshop. Leaf knows that area better than anyone.

I struck out on that river. All I ever caught was dinks. So I scratched it off my list.

I hope that this helps. The typical trout flies will work.
