The owyhee served up another nice trip over the spring break period. Rome to Leslie Gulch (about 65 miles) paddling the Aire Lynx II IKs. Were going to take the catarafts, but flows kept droppin down down down so switched to the kayaks the night before we rolled out. No body around! Only saw 2 groups, 1 - 8 person group in 3 rafts and 1 - 3 person group in 2 rafts (who were my friends). River was droppin so peeps weren't around. Flows were in the 500s. Nice weather, zero wind (unbelievably), found a few geodes and fossils. Inadvertently Left the fishing rod at the first camp (cheapo $17 spinning rod) so didn't get any small mouth fishin in, might have had something to do with morning coffee and canadian hunter mixture. Camped in the Alvord Dessert on the way down and along the SF John Day on the way home.
The sign is at Mickey hot spring, which is located on the norther edge of the Alvord Desert. There are several spring, some very hot, some boiling, one that is possibely soakable but full of algae. The photo of the hot spring above is a pool that is much to hot to get into. We typicall go to Alvord hot spring to have soak, a little farther south, but heard through the grape vine just before we left, that the old private land owner either gave over management or the land to his children who put up signs, fence, trailer and such and are semi permanently occupying the site and trying to charge folks to use the spring as well as talking about developing a resort, very laughable indeed. If you can't make a serious go of a resort at hot lake outside la grande (many failed attempts), who can succeed with a resort in the middle of BFE.
Awesome...especially the pick with moon peaking over edge...loved it!
