I used to fish Hawk Creek (just west of Davenport I think) when I was younger with my dad....anyone ever tossed flies in there? If I remember correctly, most of it was private. I'm not asking for anyone's secret holes, just wondering if anyone knows of any decent public access areas (besides the campground at the mouth). Thanks! Also, if you know of any other creeks/rivers in the area that would be worth hitting, let me know--> i.e. any input on the Kettle River?
Ive caught fish in the Kettle before, there are a lot of trout there.
As for Hawk Creek, my buddy grew up out there and has been telling me to go there for years. He claims that there are Northern Pike planted near the big waterfall on the upper part. (I wont beleive that until I see it.) He swears that he's never caught a trout under 16" there. I may have said too much I havent been there because it is mostly private and we could never coordinate bringing him out there (he knows the landowners out there and has permission to go there) Maybe someday:beer2
This won't be new to anyone. I have fished the mouth, near the campground. It has been fun! I haven't caught anything small either! I will be trying above the falls this season.
I too have fond memories of fishing Hawk Creek with my dear old dad, since I grew up in Davenport. Maybe we went to different high schools together.
All I know of Hawk Creek is from 30 years ago. It was isolated from any salmon or steelhead from the impressive falls at the lower end, even before Grand Coulee Dam. My dad's favorite strategy was to fish it right behind the hatchery truck.
It was broad and meandering where we fished 5 miles above the falls, a condition maintained by huge spring flows. My granddad's Pontiac business got flushed down the creek in the big one in '58.
I knocked around down there last fall, after visiting the cemetery. The creek looked pitifully small and choked with brush and canary grass. Nothing looked the same. I couldn't find any of the places we used to go. Everything is posted now. So many mailboxes, so many ranchettes. Some kook is building a house on the cliff above the falls. Everyone wants their piece of the West, and start feuding with the neighbors.

I used to occassionally fish the upper creek which was stocked with rainbows, and they were plentiful. But I went back a couple of years ago and found absolutely zero fish. Perhaps the state quit stalking it. And the water was real low (you could step across it in places).
The mouth down by the campground can hold some nice rainbows that move in from the main lake at times. But the place is a zoo from late spring through fall, with a ton of bait fisherman, and those spooky Eastern Washington downer types (that you westsiders fear so much) occupying the campground.
