For those who have used this fantastic camp, I was informed that Elkhorn Lodge on Rock Creek with the new ownership has elected to not allow camping or motor homes this summer. They are still offering the cabins, but no more summer nights around the camp fire laughing with friends...:-( :reallymad :beathead
You may still laugh around the fire with friends, just have to wonder above the pavement to Norton or the other 12 pay sites within the Lolo or Deer Lodge NF. There are several free sites as well along the 47 miles of river. Sure it may not be as comfy as the E-Horn with the store on the other side of the street, fresh water and a swimming pool but it is what it is.
I was looking for an opportunity to ask this question and I know the both of you fish over there a bit, so here goes.
As soon as the kids are out of school, June 18 we are going visiting up by Sand Point, ID. My thoughts were to get the visiting out of the way and continue over to W. Montana.
My question to you guys who have the experience in those parts is this. Am I going by some great water in N. Idaho that I should just settle in for a week and explore or am I thinking correctly in shooting for the Bitteroot and Rock Creek and maybe that one that comes in from the N just beyond the Bitteroot. I think its the Blackfoot.
Is the timing for Rock Creek good in late June? I guess thats the question?
I was over there in late June one time prospecting for a place to live as I was soon retiring but alas I decided to stay where I was at. But back to the Creek. I fished it and it was high but clear. I really wanted to fish Clark fork but it was very muddy and had a nice brown color. This was around and by Missoula. Don't know if this will help but there might be something in there for you to consider as to where you want to go.
Two words that spell Western Montana in that time of the year. Take plenty of them too, fish them close to the banks and you can't fail. The ONLY time I will ever say that JUST being on the water and watching the air to air clumsy battles of these bugs is better to me than actually fishing. Once the sun gets on these bugs for a half hour or so and you are in the right place, you could be sitting and watching thousands of these all around you. It really is sick, I normally can explain things well to others, but this, no, you just have to see it for yourself.
Fish em drowned!
Better than I thought and kind of what I was hoping to hear. Thanks to you all.
Now I will research and refine my schedule. One way I plan to do this is "Xtreme" research on this site as I recall some detailed musings in the past year, that I should have printed out.
Damn you for causing me to tie a couple dozen last night just cuz!
