Zap-A-Gap Bottles Suck

Great product, terrible container. I won't even go I to closing the damn thing.

My main problem (complicated by previous sentence) is that I can't keep the stupid bottle upright when not in use. It seems they thought it would look good to have a bottle rounded at the bottom, like a bowling pin.

Anybody have some Macguyver tricks to keep their Zap-A-Gap from spilling?

What Jeff said. I always keep a few pieces of flat styrofoam from packing boxes on-hand. And I make bases for EVERY bottle I'd rather not have get knocked-over. Secure in a foam base, when bottles are bumped, they slide rather than tip over. Plus, the foam makes a safe, secure spot to hold a razor blade, toothpicks, whatever sharp/pointy object you may be using.

Zap a gap is a waste of money mostly because of the lid.
Also I've noticed no difference in quality between it and regular old super glue.
I just go to the dollar store and get the two pack. One I cut the tip off so I can dip a paper clip into. The other gets mostly used until it spills, thickens up too much, or the tip gets clogged.
I can do that 3-4 times for the price of one bottle of zapagap that is useless by the time it's half empty

Forget Zap and buy the Krazy Glue in the 5g bottles. They have a flat base with a flange so they are not quite as tippy and I support the base even more with a little modeling clay near the bottom. Krazy comes with a brush which can be really handy plus you can also dip a bodkin into the bottle. This winter I have used Krazy with my whip finishing. I start the whip finisher then holding it in place with one hand I apply Krazy Glue to the thread with the other hand and make about 3 turns. It is quick and easy and really strong as the thread soaks up the glue and carries it into the wraps below.

All of the other super glue containers I have used over the years have been just crap and I have probably used less than 1/2 of their content before they jammed up or turned hard. I have used the same bottle of KG since October and it is still doing fine despite being opened many times a day and on a couple of occasions left open all night. Buy 2 bottles and keep one in reserve just in case.

I too have never had an issue with regular super glue.

Super glue hardens in the presence of moisture. So the more humidity, etc., the more quickly it will "dry" out and become unusable, though it isn't drying out. . Long term storage options include fridge/freezer, vacuum sealing, or keeping it in a jar with rice/beans/silica/desiccant.

Kyle,
Put a small piece of sticky back Velcro on the bottom bottle. Put another piece somewhere on your tying bench. It will stay upright and that is about as McGuyver as I get.

I'm also in the Krazy Glue camp. I go through a bunch of it each year on beach clousers.

I've finally started using this CA type adhesive and have not experienced the usual problems

It's a Loctite product. You need to press the sides of the bottle for the flow to start. Plus, for whatever reason, the nozzle doesn't clog... which probably has something to do with the unique cap.
I like the Loctite product, as well. I don't know why but it's the only super glue I've used that never clogs.

SHHN is what many people use for head cement, should be fine. (Especially with a whip finish.) I think superglue is stronger for some other tasks, like locking in things during the tying process--stinger hook tie-ins, lead eyes on a shank, keeping foam strips together, etc.

I'm in the Loc-tite camp too, though I use the blue bottle, which is a gel. It tends to have properties that are more desirable for me in my tying (doesn't run, bleed, or wick like a less-viscous product might).

I use CA glue sparingly, so even my last two bottles like this eventually dried before they were used up...but I'm talking a scope of 8-16 months per bottle. I can afford to replace it after that long if I haven't used it up.

There's a pretty aggressive thread pitch for the cap (iirc about 1/3 turn drops the cap from "off" to "seated"...about 1/8" down). That may be enough for them to have some kind of "spike" in the inside of the cap that goes down into the opening, so when you unscrew it, any glue that has dried up over that spike gets yanked out, thus clearing the clog.

I prefer to use Liquid Fusion. We sell it at the fly shop up here, but I know you can get it at Michaels and most other crafting stores. It's thickness is regulated by temperature, and is pretty much bottled epoxy.
It dries hard and clear, and I've used it for fully coating popper bodies, as head cement applied by using a bodkin, and as well as 'epoxying' surf candies and other similarly styled flies.

What's the dry time?

I've never had Liquid Fusion set hard for me, but I agree it's good stuff.

I do use it in a fashion where it could be considered an epoxy substitute though (securing eyes, gap filler, articulation material, etc.), but any time I've used it (and my bottle is old, they may well have changed the recipe), it has dried clear, non-tacky, but still somewhat flexible and more of a satin or semigloss than the really glossy finish of true epoxy. The bond isn't as strong either. That being said, I'm more than willing to trade a bit of bond strength and a bit of gloss for the convenience of a one-part, in the bottle, (comparatively) slow curing, slightly flexible alternative.
